It can be difficult to assess in advance what legal assistance will cost. The cases are different, and along the way they can change character and complexity.
A starting point for calculating the fee will often be the number of hours spent multiplied by the lawyer's hourly rate for the type of work in question. The fee may also depend on the type of case, the financial scope of the case, the value of the dispute, the degree of difficulty and need for special expertise, the importance of the case to the client and the result. If the assignment is clearly defined, a fixed price can be agreed.
The hourly rate and scope of the assistance are agreed before the work begins, and confirmed in an assignment confirmation. At the same time, it must be clarified whether the assistance can be covered in whole or in part by the client's insurances. For clients who are consumers, the hourly rate may vary between NOK. 2,200 and kr. 4,500. (January 2024). VAT of 25% and external costs, including court fees and travel costs, are in addition to this.
